Melomakarona Greek christmas treat

Delicious greek christmas honey cookie with sirop and chopped walnuts.
  • Sirup:
  • 500gr water
  • 700gr sugar
  • 2 sticks of cinnamon
  • 1 orange cut in two
  • 100gr honey
  • Pastry:
  • 400gr fresh orange juice
  • 530gr sunflower oil
  • 800gr flour
  • 400gr semolina the thin one
  • 50gr butter melted
  • 30gr powder sugar
  • orange zest (one orange)
  • ½ teaspoon soda
  • 1½ tsp grounded carnation
  • 2 tsp cinnamon grounded
  • for the garnish:
  • walnuts in small pieces
  • honey

  1. Preheat the oven to 180C.
  2. In this treat always start with the sirup because it must be cold when we use it.
  3. In a saucepan bring to boil all the ingredients except the honey. When it starts to boil remove it from the heat and add the honey. Let it aside to cool
  4. Now use 2 bowls. In the first add all the liquids, butter, orange zest, carnation and cinnamon. stir very well.
  5. in the second one add the flour, semolina, sugar and soda
  6. Now this step is very important because you must homogenize the flour with the liquid without stir it very much. To succeed in this part you have to make smooth and delicate moves with your hands. Once you have the flour and liquids homogenized stop. Then make small balls press them a bit and bake them for 30 mins.
  7. When the melomakarona are ready, directly from the oven, put it in the cold sirup and turn them 2-3 times. Let them ½ min and put them out. Garnish them with a bit of honey and lots of walnuts.
